Artisan Beans
Award-winning packaging design that made coffee preparation part of the experience.
The Brief
Design packaging for a premium coffee brand from scratch — with one
specific challenge: create something genuinely innovative, not just
aesthetically distinctive. The work needed to solve a real consumer
problem as well as look the part.
The Solution
The insight was simple: most premium coffee packaging looks great but
does nothing. It’s a container. The opportunity was to make the
packaging part of the experience itself.
- Designed a coffee tin with an integrated drip brewing system built directly into the lid — allowing consumers to brew fresh coffee by simply adding hot water, with no additional equipment required
- The mechanism was designed to be intuitive and clean: no visible complexity, no instructions needed beyond a glance
- The overall tin design was sleek and premium — the kind of object people keep on their countertop rather than hide in a cupboard
- Typography and visual identity developed to communicate craftsmanship and quality, without the overcrowded artisanal clichés common in the coffee category
The Outcome
The project won Best Packaging Design. The recognition wasn’t just for
aesthetics — it was for solving a genuine usability problem in a way
that felt natural and elegant.
The brief asked for innovative packaging. The solution created a ritual.
Why It Matters for You
In consumer goods, the best packaging doesn’t just contain the product
— it becomes part of the reason to buy it. Artisan Beans is a
demonstration of what’s possible when packaging design is approached as
a product design problem, not just a visual one.
